   The packaging was horrible. The boxes were inside a plastic bag. When they arrived, one of them had pieces lose inside the bag. thank goodness nothing was broken and I was able to put the pieces back where they belonged with no issues. They work just fine and I love how easy they are to use. I wanted a pair that used only regular batteries because you can always have spare batteries around if you lose power. You can’t charge the others if you are without power for an extended period. They seem well constructed, after all, they survived being shipped in nothing more than a plastic bag. I like the size and the different brightness settings. I would recommend.

   My last Coleman product was one of their white gas fired lamps with the mantles and the pump to turn the liquid into gas. Those camping days are long gone and I was looking for a lamp that would be of use around the house because for some reason our local power company can’t keep the electricity flowing on our block when the rest of the neighborhood is lit up just fine. This little guy fits the bill nicely. Let’s start with little. As you can see in the second photo it’s just over 8″ tall. That’s not a problem (but the product photo is a little vague) and it makes storing it in tight spaces rather easy. It fits on a shelf in my hall closet nicely and doesn’t take up much space in the kitchen junk drawer. If I take out most of the stuff in the Civic’s glove box it even fits there. If you’re a hiker/camper looking for a lamp you might want to think twice about this one based on photo one. With four D-cells installed it weighs almost 2.5 pounds. That might be a lot to hauling along the Appalachian Trail with everything else you need to make it to the next campsite. That’s the only drawback I’ve found so far. The three levels of illumination are good and range from a decent glow to almost blinding if you look directly at the lamp. Add the flashing setting for emergencies and you have a nice light for lots of occasions. It would be nice if there was a filter that could turn the flashing light red (this the missing fifth star) but if you thought that was needed you could manage that with a theatrical gel and some tape. All in all this is a good product with a three year warranty and what is supposed to be a lifetime LED. I expect to get some good use from it while I’m waiting for the linemen to restore power next time it goes out.

   Just like I like them, simple and they work.. I turn the knob and it tells me what setting I’m on.. I don’t need to cycle through all of the modes to figure out what I’m on.. Nice and simple, and it give me enough light. AND it closes well with the batteries in it. (some are a real pain).. I got this for power outages.. If we lose power for a few days, how am I going to recharge dead batteries? I’m not.. so, I went with good old fashioned batteries.

   READ THIS BEFORE PUTTING IN BATTERIES! This is a great lantern if you get it correctly. I had the same problem everyone seems to have with the lid not opening once you put in the batteries. After major struggle pulling out the lid, I found out why it had gotten stuck in the first place. The middle part sticking out from the lid that goes in the middle hole between the batteries has a tear drop shape. YOU HAVE TO ALIGN THE SHAPE when putting on the lid. If you don’t align it and just stick the lid in, it will go in but you will have a hell of a time getting it out. If it’s aligned you won’t have a problem at all. If you get the lid part correct it’s a great lantern. I like that it has multiple light settings and that the brightest setting is bright but doesn’t blind you. Seems very sturdy too, because I had to yank the lid open with the help of a couple screw drivers when it first got stuck and it didn’t break haha.

   Mine was a dud. Seemed like it would be just what I needed but I could not get the batteries to load correctly. I opened it where the batteries go and then could not close the door. I could neither get the batteries all the way in or remove them so back it went. Lost four new D cell batteries in the process. If you got this far thanks for listening.

    Was delighted that I purchased these before hurricane season hit us. So I put batteries in and couldn’t wait to see how well it worked. The thing jammed and I could not get it in position, could not take batteries out, could not get a light.i called Kohlman what a nasty joke! First a female rep told push this, twist that, press this and it made no sense that these directions would solve the jam up. After 15 min . Of this she told me I needed to get some in the house who is stronger than me to do it. I hit the ceiling ! I am a female, 5’8” , I do everything a household requires myself because I can – I am hulk strong! So I hung up and turned to google for a hint. There before my eyes story after story about this product expresssing the exact same experience. I returned the lanterns . However the brand new 4D Duracells went with it because they could not be removed unless I wanted to smash it. I called colemandiscount.com.     Very bright light, easy to hold, very light weight, and very reasonable price. Have bought two of them so far. I think I will buy one more. Great for walking in the woods at night (if you don’t have indoor plumbing) or down to the dock. We had a problem where I live and we were without hydro for a few days and these little guys came in so handy, making something to eat, going to the washroom, walking down the stairwell, couldn’t take the elevators, etc. I would recommend them to anyone. It’s the same size as a cell phone but the light that comes from it is amazing.

    Compact and sturdy. I often use it in my farm. Perfect for outdoors as well as indoors. No issues even when exposed to rain. But wipe and dry once under roof. Placement of switch is great. Won’t blind you when operating. I use rechargeable batteries, tested for 6 hrs continuous run. It worked well. Be cautious when closing the battery lid. Follow instructions manual to avoid any issues. Since it was import to India, I shelled out more bucks. But trust me, this Coleman lantern is perfect for outdoors and during power outage.

    This lantern was perfect for me. I’d purchased another lantern not too long before I bought this one but that lantern had to be charged often while this lantern used honest to goodness batteries and will last quite a bit longer. In my opinion, when camping out where there’s no electricity, using a lantern with actual batteries is the only way to go. A great thing with this lantern is that when not in use there’s a feature that will not cause the batteries to continue to drain. This lantern is not only lightweight but it’s built to last. I’m pleased with the different brightness selections, a bright setting for when I’d like to read before going to sleep or the lowest setting for being able to see around the tent but low enough to sleep.

    This lantern has a nice feel to it, not too heavy, but sturdy. It has been criticized for not having clear directions for installing batteries and for screwing the bottom panel into place. Although forewarned, I was surprised that anyone would have difficulty. The battery labels were obvious and the shape of the tube in the bottom panel would seem to prevent incorrectly inserting it. Maybe some of the previous concerns stated had encouraged manufacturer’s modifications. The light emitted on the highest level seemed pleasant…not glaring or room filling, but enough to allow moving around safely and much better than a flashlight or candles. For my home use, I am quite pleased with it.

    The photo above was taken in the evening about an hour and a half before sunset. The lantern has four settings – low, medium, high, and flashing and in the photo it is set on medium. You can see how bright that is. In the dark, the low setting is about on a par with most regular flashlights. The high setting lights up a dark room. The lantern is lightweight, making it very portable, but it doesn’t feel at all flimsy. Instead, the unit has a sturdy heft to it. One of the nicest features of this lantern is the Battery Guard which prevents the batteries from slowly draining away over time. Maybe once every 12-18 months we’ll lose power in my area for an extended period. I got this lantern as emergency lighting in such situations so I don’t end up sitting in the dark until the power company gets the problem resolved. That means my lantern will be sitting on the shelf for upwards of a year or more between uses. You can see why I like that Battery Guard function so much. Why the four star/five star distinction in the title? As a 70 year old guy with some health issues it’s getting harder and harder for me to do a lot of physical things. Getting the batteries into the lantern caused a bit of a hassle for me, things which more able-bodied folks probably wouldn’t even notice. First, of the four D batteries it needs, two need to go in one direction and two in the other. If I hadn’t noticed at the last second where the + and – signs were, I’d have put them in wrong. That would only have been an issue because getting the cover back into place over the batteries was a bit of an effort for me. I had to brace the lantern upside down on a countertop and press hard to get that cover far enough down for me to screw it back on. That was my own weak muscles though. Most people would be able to put the batteries in without any problems at all, which is why I am giving this a full fiver star rating. I think it’s an excellent product.

    It’s bright! Super bright! First of all the off switch is difficult to get to stay in the Off position. You have to really fiddle with it to get it to stay off. I don’t know if others are having this problem or not. Second the lantern itself was kind of dusty when I opened the box and there was dust all over the outside of the box. Maybe this is a return? I don’t know. I’ll keep it for a couple of days to see if the Off switch might engage better. I really don’t want to return it but I don’t want the lantern to switch itself on and kill these pricey D cell batteries. I’d like to give it more stars but if it won’t stay switched off then that’s a big problem.
