   This product uses permethrin to make your clothing unattractive and fatal to insects and is very commonly used in my area (Western MA) to protect against lyme-disease bearing ticks. Since we have a bumper crop of ticks this spring, I got some. The package is very clear about the dangers of using it. In a sentence, don’t let anything or anyone you don’t want to kill near your clothes after treatment. This is good; forewarned is forearmed. And it comes with a lock to the nozzle to avoid accidental spraying. But when I used it, laying my clothing on a gravel driveway, the spray was highly erratic and got all over the can and my hands. I tried hanging the clothes up against the barn, so I could hold the can vertically; same result. The can says that if you get anything on your skin, you must immediately wash for 15 to 20 minutes. Not seconds. So instead of singing “Row Row Row Your Boat” three times, you could listen to the entire “Stairway to Heaven” three times, with breaks. I would not recommend this to any living being.

   I am preparing to go on a backpacking trip. I bought to to treat my gear and clothes before leaving. I tried to treat my tent this morning and the spray top was broken. Everything looked fine externally, but it did not mist when it sprayed. It sprayed very large blogs of foamy liquid onto my text. Please refer to the pictures. This product did not work as it was intended to. I bought the Sawyer brand right afterward. It came the same day and worked beautifully. I was able to spray my tent, just a few hours later.

   I was gifted a very unique framed picture for my fly tying room. A fly that was part of the picture had deteriorated and I dismantled the frame to replace it with one of mine. I removed the glass, picture and backing revealing a family of ticks had taken up residence. I immediately put everything into a 2.5 Gallon Zip-Loc bag. I ordered this spray bottle of Permethron spray which arrived the next day. A few light sprays over the next two days, and a through cleaning (outdoors), took care of the problem. No signs of life.

   I sprayed 4 pairs of synthetic fiber pants, 4 pairs of merino/synthetic blend socks, and 1 pair of leather/synthetic blend hiking boots with this bottle. I wore these clothes for 2 weeks in the Shenandoah area of Virginia in May, including hiking through forests, streams, fields, and meadows. I also wore long sleeved shirts (NOT sprayed) and tucked in my shirt as well as tucking my pants into my socks. I looked AMAZING as you can imagine but most importantly, I did not find a single tick on myself during my daily tick checks. I think I was the only one in my group of 15 who escaped without a tick the whole two weeks. I didn’t end up using the DEET spray I’d bought because I learned that it can stain or ruin most of the clothing I had packed. I had no effect to my clothing when using this product and after it dried I never noticed a smell. I also washed the clothes a few times during the 2 weeks and saw no change in efficacy.

    After going out Pheasant hunting and getting covered in ticks a fellow hunter told me about this stuff. I applied it and it lasts through a few washes. Went out hunting 4 times after applying it in the wild life area and not one tick on me. Will be sticking up on this stuff. Designate a set of cloths for hiking or hunting and use this stuff

    The chemical inside is probably great. I’m assuming 5 stars. But the can’s nozzle is terrible; 1 star. It was so hard to press the nozzle down to spray, that I thought I was doing something wrong. Other people have the same problem though. It took me both hands (well, both thumbs) to press it down for it to spray. I’m sure it sounds like I’m exaggerating, but if you bought this, you would be amazed at how absurdly difficult it really is to press.

    Chemical; 5 stars. Can/nozzle; 1 star. Combined, I give it 3 stars. And I think I’m being generous.
