   You need to use ‘a lot’ of magnesium shavings for this to work, and they have to be all together in a tight pile. You need a pile about the size and thickness of a couple quarters – it takes a significant effort to shave off the necessary amount of material. For me, this is more of a novelty item for entertainment purposes rather than a serious tool.

   Worked just like described. I’ve read some of the reviews here. I didn’t need a lot of shavings, i used dryer lint as tinder and placed the shavings on the lint,a couple of sparks and flame on.

   I agreed with the bad review of the item until I learned how to use it, partial user error and ambiguous directions on Coleman’s part. It says to create a small amount of shavings, which is relative. I found better directions from other reviews of similar items. What worked for me was about 15-30 seconds of continuous shaving onto a tissue. Once done lift sides of tissue to get shavings into center. Then with one full strike watch that baby burn.

   Magnesium would not light with a blow torch. Striker and flint worked fine.

   This product is simple and does what it promises reliably. On dry days, I have lit my tinder pile with some sparks from the flint itself; the magnesium shavings WILL light the tinder well, even in rain and wet, provided the tinder is dryish. This has lit even wet 2-3mm pine twigs (and I mean soaked!) in northern Canada winters. Will be ordering more to keep around.
