   PRICE: This is a very good price considering the size and functionality of the tent. It is a good price for people looking for a simple tent to do some simple camping. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s roomy and gets the job done. SET-UP: I have to admit, it took me over an hour the first time to set it up and put it away. I absolutely could not get it back in the bag. After I had everything figured out, it took like 10 minutes to set up everything and I had the help of two other people, so it went by fast. It is still a bit rough putting it away and getting it to fit in the bag, but don’t give up. SIZE: It states this is an eight person tent. You can definitely fit eight, but you’ll be very much side by side. You can comfortably fit six and have plenty of wiggle room though. RAIN: I haven’t had the chance to use it in heavy rain yet, but I have used it in general everyday rain. For the most part, there were no leaks at all. It is a bit sketchy considering how the entire “ceiling” is just mesh. Thankfully the cover does cover the majority of it. You can see this in the photo, but in the front, there is a fairly sized gap between the cover and the mesh. So if you’re facing the rain, you’re probably going to get soaked. I faced my tent away from the rain, and so had no issues at all. WIND: I had my tent set up in some heavy wind. The tent shook constantly and it was very loud. However, I am surprised nothing blew away. The tent bent back and forth but it was all still in the ground and put together once it was over. DURABILITY: I was disappointed at the holes and tears that were visible upon receiving the tent. I can sew and did’t need to go through the process of exchanging. It took a bit of time to actually get my tent, so I didn’t want to wait longer, but that’s another story. So, instead of trying to go through the mess of contacting customer service, I went ahead and patched it up with some needle and string and tape. WARMTH: It gets EXTREMELY COLD or EXTREMELY WARM. In the mornings, it is so incredible hot and there is just not enough ventilation. The entire top is mesh but that lets in more sun and more burning hot rays. At night, it is soooo cold. The mesh top with all the gaps between the cover don’t help at all. I wished every night the top could just be zipped up like the other “windows”. I highly recommended a sweater and a heavy blanket to stay warm at night. The temperature is just right for about 2-3 hours a day, but that’s it. PETS: At first, my small shih-tzu was very nervous of this giant russling plastic thing, but he soon grew to love it. OVERALL: Yeah, I would recommend it for basic camping needs.

   After a whole lot of review comparisons, of various brands and sizes of cabin-style tents, I settled on the Coleman Montana 8 person tent. I didn’t need self-rolling windows or yet another lamp, so I went with the standard, “non-Elite” version. We got the Blue/White/Black coloured tent, as opposed to the “sea-foam”-ish green tent which seems to be in greater supply. At the time we purchased it, the price was the same as for the green version. We are a family of three, and we wanted a lot of extra room to move around without having anything too cumbersome. The size of this tent was perfect for placing our queen-size air mattress on one end, and our gear and clothes on the other, while having a nice wide area in the middle in which to stand, change clothes, and move around each other while entering/exiting the tent. The centre height was perfect for me to stand stand up straight, with room to spare beneath the webbing, but I’m only 5’9′. the Elite version of the tent seems to list a higher centre height despite that the tent looks almost identical in the photos. The two end windows are angled outward so that in a light rain it is possible to keep them open without the rain coming through the windows. The front awning is certainly large enough that the front window can be left open in slightly heavier rain without a problem, but wind will be something to factor in. As others have noted, the tent comes packaged in a conveniently sized carry bag (27″ x 8″ x 8″), with separate bags for stakes and poles. The poles are sort of colour-coded to the sleeves the go into on the tent body and the rain-fly awning. one of the black poles has red swatches indicating it is for the awning. The two black poles and the grey poles support the tent body. Two very thin poles act as the door hinge and flap support. The entry matt is a separate piece with its own pair of stakes. After reading numerous reviews that praised this tent for being waterproof out of the box, I decided to trust the reviewers, and the manufacturer’s factory seam taping, and pitch it as it was. 17 stakes in the ground, 7 poles, 8 guy lines, and a half-hour later, the tent was up and looking quite nice. Everything was wonderful, until it started raining our second night out. We had steady, light rain, and only a few hours after it began the inside of the rain-fly began beading with water droplets. Luckily, we had a plastic painting tarp that we were able to throw over the rain-fly and tie down. After shaking off the water build-up on the outside of the rain-fly and quickly positioning and tying down the tarp, we dried off the inner surface of the rain-fly, and things help up fine. We were also lucky that there was very little wind, so our tarp stayed in place. Lesson learned: ALWAYS seam seal and waterproof your rain-fly, regardless of what the reviewers tell you. The “bathtub”, or floor of the tent, stayed perfectly dry despite water pooling on the tarp we put underneath the tent as a footprint. It was just the rain-fly that was not up to its task. We also had some slight trouble with the hinged door, which has a pole that supports the edge, and another that acts as the hinge. It also has several swatches of Velcro along the edge that are supposed to catch as the door swings closed, preventing the need to always zipper it shut. The door was a pain in the arse. The Velcro never lined up correctly, nor held properly. And the pole supporting the edge made zipping the door open and shut very difficult. We ended up simply removing the pole that supports the edge, and zipping the thing each time we passed through. Even without the door pole, it was necessary to pinch the tent above the door in order to get the zipper past a certain catch point that seems to result from the way the front of the tent hangs from the structural rods. I couldn’t figure a way to tighten the guy lines to pull the poles in a way to prevent this. But, in all, the door operated far more easily as a regular tent door, than the “hinged door” it was designed to be. There is a small ring attached to a fabric tab at the apex of the tent which can hold a lamp hanging on a carabiner, but I sort of wish this tent had a mesh shelf handing there, instead. There are two mesh bags hanging on the walls, one at each end, on opposing walls. Despite the failed factory taping on the rain-fly, and poorly engineered “hinged door”, we really enjoyed this tent, and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a cabin style tent as many as four or five people.

   This is the first family tent that I’ve bought other than a backyard pop-up. Size: it fits four people well with air mattresses at either end. I can see fitting 6 people in a row lengthwise, but it’s hard to see how 8 people could fit unless no one used air mattresses and you were side by side like sardines. Interior space: The center has a good amount of head space, if you put the sleeping bags at either end, it makes a comfortable space. There is a side pocket on either end to store things and a light hook at each end and in the center. The zip opening for an electric cord is handing, although it would be nice to have one on the other side as you either have to orient the tent towards the outlet or have a long extension cord. I really like the structure to the door. Set up and take down: it’s easy to put up once you know where everything goes. There were a couple of steps on the instructions that were a little confusing, basically everything connects to the silver rings. Once you understand that, it’s easy. The take down only takes about 5 minutes. The hard part is folding it to get back in the case. The first time we used it, I was able to get the tent back into the case, but there is no way the rain fly was going back in. The second time, I couldn’t even get the tent in and zipped. There must be a trick to getting all the air out and it flat enough, but I haven’t figured it out yet. Weathering the elements: We’ve used this twice. The first time, it stood up under very windy conditions. The tents of people around us were collapsing, but this little tent held up to the winds. We haven’t used it in rain yet. Edited May 2018: We took this out on a trip in some Houston rains and I didn’t notice any leaking at all. Packing up, I asked another camper the trick to getting a tent rolled up tight enough to get it back in the case. The trick is the tent poles. Lay down your tent pole bag at the end of the tent and fold the tent in thirds so that the folded tent is no wider than the tent pole bag. Then place your pole bag at the end of the tent and begin to slowly roll up the tent, allowing the weight of the poles to push the air out of the tent. The experienced camper told me it was important to go slow and not force the air out or it could damage the tent. Since the tent is a rectangular dome, there will be more tent in the center, so you have to be sure to keep folding in the extra as you roll up to it. The trick is when you come to the other end. Since it has a tub bottom, all the air will be pushed ballooning up that waterproof (and airproof) area. There will be no place for the air to escape. To get the last bit of air out, roll back the end you’ve been rolling over the stakes until you come to the end wall window. Next roll up the end you’ve been trying to reach, which is ballooned up. So the pole end is just unrolled to the window and the opposite end is rolling TO the window, pushing out all the trapped air. Unroll the end with the poles to the opposite end again. If there is still too much air, repeat until the whole thing will roll flat. I had to do this three times, but in the end everything fit. I was able to fit everything back into the case completely with room to spare.

   I’m pretty happy with this tent for the most part. It can fit 4 twin air mattresses with a little room to spare. I think a 5th air mattress would fit but there would be no room left over at all. I do wish it was a little more than 7 feet deep since there is hardly any room left around the air mattress. Some reviewers said that it was difficult to set up but I don’t think it was that bad. Having two people helps. Pros: The rain fly awning over the door. It has a decent overhang. The door mat. It is a little small but certainly better than our previous tent. We put some carpet pieces around it for a little extra space. The tarp-like floor. It also goes up the sides several inches to make the bottom waterproof. You can zip the door with one hand. I always hated tents that were hard to hard to open. The tent is almost completely rectangular. No odd angles at the ends. Cons: There are only 2 mesh pockets. Not enough windows. The main reason I took away one star was because of the door. It is a hinged door with rods and it’s supposed to open and shut easily. The problem is that the rods make it so the door will not stay shut unless you zip it. Basically the door is flat and the tent is curved. There is velcro there that is supposed to hold the door shut even when it is not zipped but it doesn’t work. The velcro is not lined up at all and you are lucky if you get one of the three velcros to attach and stay which leaves giant gaps anyway. You can see from my picture that I have the center velcro attached but the bottom of the door is still open a few inches. If you don’t close the door, the tension in the rods holds the door open about 10 inches which will let bugs in. I was so disappointed because the hinged door was a big reason I wanted the tent. Also, the door is kind of small. You have to bend over to get in. Zipping from the outside is easy but there is about 3 inches of material in the way on the inside which makes it really hard to zip from the inside. Overall I’m happy with the tent and I think we got it for a decent price.

   We were looking for a tent that would comfortably hold our family all sleeping on cots and air mattresses and having suitcases and all the things that come with a week long camping trip. We found it. The picture shows just how big it is inside. I am standing at one end and my son is at the other. It’s also tall. My 6 foot husband can stand up comfortably in the middle of the tent and only has to duck a bit at the ends. My one concern is windows. There are windows on the 2 ends, but otherwise all the air flow is supposed to come in from the top of the tent. I am the type of person who likes to be prepared and so I usually always have the rain fly on the tent. If I do that I will block the majority of our air flow. So, I bought a rechargeable fan that I plan on hanging in the middle of the tent to help facilitate some air flow. We practiced setting it up and tearing it down. It did take us some extra paracord tied around the tent to wrestle it back into the tent bag. But the setup was pretty easy and quick so that is a big win. Just watch the pole sizes, we put the wrong one in the wrong place at first. We are taking larger triangle shaped tent spikes, it comes with the standard, round spikes like every tent does.
