As mentioned in another review, we aren’t able to remove the cover to the battery compartment to insert batteries. Arrows on the bottom made it look like it should twist off but it didn’t budge. We were finally able to remove it by pulling it off with some difficulty. It is not a screw-on cover.

We have three Coleman battery-powered lanterns that have served us well for more than 20 years, and one has now stopped working so I ordered this model as a replacement. It arrived packaged in a plastic bag (no box) and was in four pieces. I found the little manual crammed into the battery compartment, so it had apparently already been returned once. I tried assembling it, no pictures of the inside to guide me, and don’t know if something critical was missing — but it could not be made to produce light. (Yes, I inserted brand-new D cell batteries.) Construction is very flimsy and the (presumed) reflector cone was little better than tinfoil and did not fasten snugly into the lid. Very big disappointment compared to the sturdy ones we have. I don’t think I have ever posted a one-star rating before. Grrrrrrr!

I’m not sure what I expected but the lamps were smaller than I thought they would be. We adapted to them quickly as a trial proved they were indeed helpful in the dark during our trial simulation. Handy ad well as a small footprint allowed us to use them practically everywhere inside and outside the house.
I can see these lanterns for use camping and hiking on the rare occasions when I might want to take a stroll at a campground especially to use the facilities at night.
These diminutive lanterns will likely helpful when I need to check my yard at night in areas not served by porch or patio lights when I prefer not to trip or fall. Can a flashlight serve that purpose, too? Sure but most flashlights can’t be hung and where would you hang them if you suddenly need two hands to carry something in addition to the lantern, which can be carried over my wrist. Easy peasy!

I bought this as an open box item to replace an older Coleman lantern that did not have an LED bulb.
One thing you should know about the removable base is that it does not screw on, it twists to lock (and unlock), then you just pull it off.
Overall brightness is OK, it’s perfect for a tent or for lighting up a cooking area, etc. I’ve always kept one around the home for power outages, because I know that the batteries will last for days if needed.
Obviously, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives available. However, I like the classic look, and this design has been around for a long time. It’s good value for money, providing you don’t spend a fortune on the batteries.
